Modern Awards and the National Employment Standards
Modern Awards & National Employment Standards commence 1 Jan 2010
New modern awards and National Employment Standards (NES) commence operation across Australia on 1 January 2010. The modern awards and NES establish the minimum wages and conditions of employment for most employees in Australia - a safety net of minimum enforceable protections.
Within the electrical and communications contracting industry, the relevant modern awards for most NECA members are the Electrical, Electronic and Communications Contracting Award 2010 which covers electrical and communications workers (including apprentices) employed by contractors and the Clerks - Private Sector Award 2010 which covers clerical and administrative employees.
These modern awards replace previous awards which cease to operate on 1 January 2010.
The National Employment Standards (NES) prescribe such conditions as maximum weekly hours of work, annual leave, parental leave, personal/carers leave, long service leave, notice of termination and redundancy pay etc.
The modern Award system and National Employment Standards commenced on 1 January 2010. Together they establish the minimum terms and conditions of employment for the majority of employees throughout Australia.
In our industry, there will be two modern Awards that apply in the workplace. For electrical and communications employees (including apprentices) it will be the Electrical, Electronic and Communications Contracting Award 2010 that applies. For clerical and general administrative employees it will be the Clerks – Private Sector Award 2010 that applies.
The National Employment Standards (NES) compliment the modern Award system and prescribe a suite of mandatory terms and conditions of employment including maximum weekly hours of work, annual leave, parental leave, personal/carer’s (sick) leave, long service leave, notice of termination, redundancy entitlements and so on.
